I have kept the shawl I knitted for my daughter, many years ago and when I looked at it recently I saw that it was rather yellow. Washing has improved it but its still a little discoloured, does anyone have suggestions to improve this? It is over 37 years old so I want to treat it gently. It is knitted on two needles in Patons 2ply pure wool, the pattern was from a Patons leaflet. The shawl is joined when knitting is completed.

Hi Jan, the only thing I can think of as a possibility to restore the whiteness to your lovely shawl is that stuff used to whiten nets. How did you store it? I've just got the Heirloom Knitting book and it recommends in there to store by folding lightly with as few folds as possible; encase it in acid free white tissue paper and then slip it into a clean pillow case and store in a dry cupboard. Nothing should be placed on top of it to avoid flattening. Polythene bags are not recommended because they destroy the colour and feel of the wool over time. Apologies if you already have this book!
